Grid Tie units are used directly with the power grid and do not require an inverter or battery banks, although a battery bank can be used to provide backup power to the end user. This can be used with net metering. These units are hi speed

Slow Speed Non Grid Tie units are used directly with a battery bank and require an inverter They can also be used with a special type inverter if grid tie is desired  but normally a conventional inverter is used and it is not connected to the grid. These units normally provide power when connection with the grid is not desired or not available.
